How To Rank Any Website – The Secret Is In The Keywords

Choosing the right Keywords can be the difference between having a successful or unsuccessful website or business in terms of traffic, rankings and sales!

But, not all keywords are created equal. If you are just starting out and building a new website, then targeting a keyword or group of keywords that is highly competitive or dominated by big name companies will not be the best route to take.Think about it, do you have the financial resources to go up against the likes of Amazon, Microsoft or even Ford Motor Company? Probably not!

If you try to rank for a keyword that a large corporation ranks for or that has millions of pages associated with it, then odds are your page will more than likely not rank in the search engines very well and even might have the potential to never be seen by anyone ever..

Don’t worry though, there are still multiple methods to rank for less competitive keywords and build our traffic in different ways. That is exactly what we are going to discuss here today.

But first things first, let’s talk a little about just what a keyword is.

A keyword is the search word or phrase that you or anyone else would type into Google, Bing, yahoo or any other search engine in order to find  information on a specific topic.

  • How to potty train
  • How to find a job
  • How to get six pack abs
  • Chicken cordon blue recipe’s
  • How to fix a muffler
  • Price of new tires
  • Eye doctor near me (zip code)
  • What is better PlayStation 4 or Xbox 1

All of these terms listed above are keywords. These are search terms that real people like you and I search for every day. Now some of these may not be keywords that we would go after, I am using these just for example purposes.

Keyword Competition VS Keyword Traffic

Technique 1: Simple Google Search for competition

We are looking for highly searched keywords with little or low competition. These are the golden nuggets, these are the type of keywords that will either make or break our business by being able to rank our pages.

The first way we can perform some quick basic free keyword research is to google with quotes around the keywords we are searching for.

This method is primarily for competition purposes and will not show the amount of traffic for a specific keyword. When starting out it’s a good rule of thumb to only target competing keywords that have under 300 results for that exact keyword.

Let’s look at the image below as an example.

Google Search for Broad Keyword
Google Search for Broad Keyword

I searched the term “how to find a job.” This search returned over 81 million competing pages that rank for this specific term. Just imagine how hard it would be for us to rank for a keyword with over 81 million competing pages! Would the amount of effort to even get that page to rank even be worth the reward? The answer is no!

This example is too vague to profit from or rank for.

Now let’s take a look at the next image as an example.

Google Search for more Narrow Keyword
Google Search for more Narrow Keyword

I still used the same search term “how to find a job” but I narrowed it down into a specific type of job and used “how to find a job in electronics.” Now, this new narrow search term only has 4 competing pages, so we went from 81 million to 4! How hard is it going to be to rank on page 1 of google for “how to find a job in electronics?” It won’t be hard at all and guess what? You will still be ranking for “how to find a job” too because that keyword is still part of the text in the search term.

This example is much more narrow and would be easy to rank for.

But does “how to find a job in electronics” get enough traffic to even bother with trying to rank the keyword? To answer this question; you are going to need something a little more advanced than a regular google search.

Technique 2: Free Keyword Tools

You can find a more advanced keyword tool that will give traffic and search results for free just by signing up with Wealthy Affiliate. It’s completely free to join Wealthy Affiliate and gain access to this tool and it only takes a few minutes of time to get signed up and started.

Technique 3: The good Ole Alphabet Soup in Google Technique.

When searching for popular Keywords, google can be utilized again to help you find the popular search terms and it’s already right there at your finger tip’s. With the alphabet soup technique

With the alphabet soup technique, you will want to open a private browser window in Internet Explorer or an incognito window in Chrome. Then pull up Google and start typing a relevant keyword term that you want to rank for and google does the rest.

As you can see in the example below I started typing “How to Find a Job” and google gave me 4 other popular search terms that begin with “how to find a job.”  This can be used in any order and as many times as you want, I could have used “find a job in” or “how to find local jobs.” Try it out  yourself, it’s a good technique to get some of the most popular searched terms in google and these generally rank well too.

Personally, I would much rather spend that keyword research time writing good content or adding additional pages to my website. Believe me, I was once just starting out using those same time-consuming methods for keyword research. That’s why as soon as I started making enough money online a keyword research tool like

Believe me, I was once just starting out and I was using those same time-consuming methods for keyword research. That’s why as soon as I started making enough money online, the very first thing I purchased was a keyword research tool and Jaaxy was the best of the best!

Well, it all depends on what you plan to Blog about and if you are trying to monetize the blog. If you are just writing you daily experiences like a diary or personal blog then it will only require as much work as you want to devote to it.
